AMG badges are cheap; a real C36 or C43 is not. Work the decisive markers (VIN model code and engine) first, then the supporting ones, and read the confidence verdict.
A real C36 is model code 202.036; a real C43 is 202.070-series (variant digits 33 on later cars). Anything else with AMG badges is a conversion.
C36: hand-built M104 3.6 with an AMG engine plate and unique number. C43: M113 4.3 V8 (a V8 in a W202 is AMG-only). A standard M104/M111 under AMG badges is a replica.
Period AMG cars carry AMG identification and paperwork. No plate, no history, treat the badges as decoration.
17-inch AMG monoblocks were standard. Correct wheels support the case but are easily added, so weight them lightly.
C36/C43 ran larger discs and uprated suspension. Standard C-Class brakes behind AMG wheels is a flag.
AMG instruments, steering wheel and badging were specific. Aftermarket parts are common, so corroborate with the VIN.
