This is a 1990 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II. Number 473 of 502. The number is on the shift knob.
Mercedes did not build five hundred and two of these because the market asked. They built them because DTM homologation required a production run. Five hundred on the road so the race car could exist. All but the last two left Sindelfingen in Blauschwarz Metallic- DB 199. This is one of those.
I bought it on Bring a Trailer on 12 February 2022. Eighteen thousand kilometres. First retail: Autohaus Santelmann, Lüneburg, July 1990. Then Portugal, Greece, the Netherlands. Onto a Florida title in March 2020. VIN WDB2010361F738813.
The engine is the short-stroke Cosworth 2.5 with the AMG PowerPack. Factory 232 horsepower. Dogleg Getrag five-speed. Limited-slip. Self-levelling suspension. Seventeen-inch six-spoke Evo II wheels. Recaros in anthracite leather. Zebrano on the console. The wing at the back is the adjustable one, larger than Evolution I, because the aero package is the reason the body exists.
I did not buy a restomod. I did not buy a tribute. I bought the homologation car, in the colour they actually painted, with the number still on the lever.
It needs a few laps around Sebring. That was the bid comment. That is still the plan.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a Getrag five-speed manual gearbox and a limited-slip differential.
The 2.5-liter DOHC inline-four was developed by Cosworth and features a shorter stroke and larger bore than the standard 2.5-16 model. Evolution II examples are also equipped with the AMG PowerPack, which includes a revised throttle body, air intake, camshafts, engine management programming, and exhaust system. Output was factory rated at 232 horsepower.
The shift knob displays the dogleg shift pattern and notes that the car is #473 in the series.
The cabin features heated and bolstered Recaro front seats upholstered in Anthracite leather with matching door panels, black carpeting, and Zebrano wood trim on the center console. Features include air conditioning, power windows, a Becker Grand Prix cassette stereo, an outside temperature gauge, a digital clock, and a floor-mounted fire extinguisher.
The 17″ six-spoke alloy wheels are mounted with 245/40 Michelin Pilot Sport tires showing 2003 date codes. A matching spare wheel with an older Dunlop tire are mounted under the trunk floor. The Evolution II featured a lower ride height, wider track, and larger brakes than the contemporary 2.5-16.

Over the page: Autohaus Santelmann, three names to ring if it broke. Then it leaves Germany. A Portuguese certificado issued 7 April 2011 puts it on Manuel José do Espírito Santo Ferrão, first floor left, Rua Professor Reinaldo dos Santos, Lisbon. They wrote the model out in full: 190E 2.5 16 EVOLUTION II and the chassis, 738813. Colour: preto e outras. Tyres already 245/40 ZR17. Down in the notes: it had worn Dutch plates, 2-69-96, since 5 July 1990. The day after Lüneburg.

A collection of paint meter readings can be seen in the gallery. Blauschwarz. Code 199U. Chassis 738813. Sixteen ferrous readings across the shell. Average 4.64 mil,about 118 microns. That is factory thickness, not a respray. Bonnet, both front wings, both doors, both rear quarters, decklid, sunroof, roof centre and roof offset. The map is even. One door reads a little higher. Nothing in the double-digit mil range that says a panel was painted twice.
