Black W111 Fintail – Mercedes-Benz 220S in Japan

1962 · Damascus, Japan

File 104 Share image

This account documents a black Mercedes-Benz 220S of the W111 Heckflosse series, kept and driven in Japan by its owner over an extended period. The car appears consistently across dozens of posts, photographed in varied seasonal settings including autumn foliage, hydrangeas, and snow, suggesting it is used regularly throughout the year.

The 220S is shown at locations ranging from ordinary petrol stations to the grounds of the historic Fujiya Hotel in Hakone, indicating the car sees genuine road use rather than static display. No bodywork modifications, wheel changes, or mechanical upgrades are referenced in any caption, and the car presents in what appears to be largely original condition.

Occasional posts feature the 220S alongside other vintage vehicles belonging to acquaintances, including a VW Beetle and a Toyota Sports 800, though these appear as incidental encounters rather than a recurring group. The account also publishes unrelated posts covering other classic cars such as a Toyopet Crown, Datsun Fairlady, and Mazda Carol, which are not part of the primary subject matter.

The W111 chassis, produced between 1959 and 1968, was known internally as the Heckflosse or fintail on account of its vestigial tail fins. The 220S variant used a carburetted 2.2-litre inline-six engine and represented the mid-range specification within the W111 saloon lineup.
