560 SEL or 420 SEL as a long-term keeper?

Choosing between a good 420 SEL and a slightly rougher 560 SEL. Which W126 makes the better keeper if I plan to hold it ten years?

Condition beats badge on a W126 — a rough 560 will cost more than the gap between them. That said, the 560 is the one collectors ask for and the M117 5.6 is a wonderful thing. On either: check timing chain and guides history, the self-levelling rear suspension, and rust in the usual spots (jack points, wings, under the battery).

Drive both. The 420 revs a little sweeter, the 560 has the effortless shove. Buy on bodywork and paperwork, not the number on the boot lid.
